The Toyota Fortuner is a luxury sports-utility vehicle (SUV) offering great value at slightly over one million baht. It comes with seven seats, top-notch quality, high performance engine and a fine balance between on- and off-roading capability. This popular SUV is based on wildly popular Hilux Vigo and on luxury Lexus. It comes either with a 2.7-liter petrol (118 bhp @5200 rpm, 241 Nm @ 3800 rpm) or a 3-liter D4D turbo-diesel engine (120 bhp @ 3400 rpm, 343 @ 1400 rpm). Four- or five-speed automatic gearboxes are available.
The all-new Toyota SUV completes the Innovative International Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) line-up together with the Hilux pick-up, introduced in December 2004 and the Innova Multipurpose Vehicle launched last February.

Fortuner comes in three models:
- Fortuner 2.7 V 4WD Petrol is available only in Automatic Transmission
- Fortuner 3.0 V 4WD Diesel in Automatic Transmission. It comes with 2 airbags, ABS, turbo intercooler, 7-seater with dual aircons, 6 cd mp3 player, leather seating and parking sensors
- Fortune 3.0 G 4WD Diesel in Manual Transmission. It has 2 airbags and is a 7-seater but seating is not leather, and without steering controller and parking sensor
Although the car is based on a pick-up its styling is pure SUV with hints at the luxurious Lexus RX300. As mentioned earlier, it is a 7-seater just as its recently introduced local competitor, the Isuzu MU7. These seven seats with a wheelbase of 2750 mm, give us enough space to accommodate the tallest of passengers.
Fortuner replaces Toyota 4Runner (Fourrunner), which is known as Toyota Hilux Condor in some markets and as SportsRider in Thailand and Indonesia.
Like all modern day SUVs, the interiors are car-like, but unlike a car, the Toyota Fortuner is definitely able to handle most kinds of terrain you can throw at them. So you get the comfort of a car with off-road capabilities of a 4x4.
Toyota has decided to go the safe way - and so this will be a ladder-on chassis SUV with all its attendant benefits. The front suspension will have independent double wishbone suspension which should make for good control.
Fortuner has turned Thailand's SUV market upside down. According to Bangkok Post, it has grabbed a 70.4% share of the market by increasing its sales by a whopping 1,204%. The table on the left shows the vehicle sales figures for March 2005. This is what Bangkok Post had to say about these results:
"The Toyota Fortuner's rear coil-spring setup and performance-oriented oil-burner gave the sport-utility segment a much needed boost with first-quarter sales of 9,388 units for an unprecedented 111.4% increase over last year during the Ricke period.
"More than 6,600 customer deliveries of the Fortuner SUV based on Toyota's Innovative International Multi-Purpose Vehicle (IMV) underpinned the performance, while the 1KD-FTV engine delivering 163hp and 363Nm of torque, has pumped new life into the once stagnant SUV segment which sold only 4,442 units in the first quarter last year.
"Toyota literally cornered the SUV market this year as seen by its 70.4% market share and an incredible 1,204.1% jump over last year's first quarter mark.
"This scenario is basically the Ricke as when the previous Sport Rider caused a major stir in SUV sales before the turn of the century."
Fortuner has caused a similar stir in the Philippines. According to the Manila Times ABS-CBN:
"We have an average of 100 reservations per dealership," boasted Toyota Motor Philippines PR officer Ariel de Jesus. "We're already talking 1,300 units here for our Metro Manila dealers alone. Even the Innova didn't get this kind of response," he added.
"De Jesus was referring to Toyota's latest product in the market, the Fortuner SUV, and his enthusiasm was based on the fact that the Fortuner was formally launched only last week."

Power and Performance
Toyota's incomparable reputation in engineering and technology lies deep within the potent source of the vehicle's power. The entire vehicle may not qualify as tech-savvy but its engine will. It's rated at 158 horsepower and produces 241 Nm of torque.
Meanwhile, the top-model Fortuner 4x4 packs a 3.0-liter direct-injection, common rail diesel engine called the D-4D. Also an advanced engine, the D-4D features a variable nozzle turbocharger with intercooler, and this boost of fresh air forced to the engine allows it a 161-horsepower rating and a robust 343 Nm of torque all throughout the 1,400-to-3,200-rpm range. Bolt the D-4D to an electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission and combine it with a full-time four-wheel-drive system and the Fortuner should provide an entertaining ride. (The 4x2 gets the Ricke transmission as the 4x4.)
The Toyota Outstanding Platform (TOP) provides rigidity and control for a more superb driving experience.
